We so appreciate your skills and passion for photography! We love to have both professional and student photographers volunteering at our event! You will be assigned to take photos of participants and volunteers at specific locations and times during the event. As soon as possible after the event you will share the photos with the race director to share on social media and future marketing. We will credit you with the photos as we post them the first time. Later we may use them in marketing efforts. By volunteering to be a photographer, you agree that you are providing your services for free, to benefit the charity and you will not be compensated. Additionally the organization may use your photos without further permission. We are more than happy to provide you with a reference and/or sign off for volunteer hours.
Your job is very important for the safety and well-being of our runners! You will be posted at one of our 9 Water Stations. Once you get to the table, set up the water dispenser and begin to fill cups. Once runners begin to pass thru your location, have most of your volunteers grab cups and hand off the water as the runner passes. Please don’t grab the top of the cup but rather hold the cup from the bottom. You will get wet! Have fun with it! If you notice any runner in distress or in need of assistance please call or radio our medical volunteer. When runners are passing thru, please encourage them and cheer them on! We want to be known as the friendliest race! We have the best volunteers!
These volunteers need to be available for two shifts. Friday May 8th 2pm – 8pm (at least 2 hours) Saturday May 9th 6am – 9am (some will be excused after the 8am races begin) These volunteers offer the first impression of our event. We will welcome participants in to pick up their race packets, register on-site and answer questions. We will give each participant their race bib, event t-shirt and goodie-bag. On Friday, the participants are usually very excited and we want to share that experience with them & send them off with positive vibes and encouragement. On Saturday, you will see excitement as well as some nerves and last minute stressors. It is our job to move fast, offer service with a smile, assure and encourage our participants to be ready for the cannon start at 8am! The morning will go by in a flurry until the runners are off & suddenly… all is quiet. From 8am to 9am there will be a small flow of Fun Run participants coming by. After 9am we will ask 2 to stay on to sell extra t-shirts, accept lost & found items and award Expo Bingo players with their reward for a Black Out of signatures on their score sheet. We have a lot of fun and keep very busy for the most part.
As a member of our bike team you will assist the participants by leading or tailing groups of runners through our 5k and 13.1 mile courses. We like to have 2 for our 5K and 4 for the Half Marathon. One lead that leads the #1 runner and that pack, a second that leads the majority of the non-elite runners. The third and fourth bikes take turns tailing the last runners. The one not tailing will bike up and down the course checking for participants in need of assistance. Our bike crew is an important part of our event, ensuring the safety of our participants and being the eyes and ears on the course.

Top 5 Course Marshal Duties 1) Runner Safety. The most important job of every course marshal is to protect the safety of every participant. Depending on your location, you may be halting car traffic or warning racers of danger, but the key to every job is to make sure that a clear roadway is available for passing racers. 2) Traffic Control. Cars often do not know how to react to all of these people with race bibs on. Course marshals must make judgment calls on how best to move traffic through while maintaining racer safety. Course marshals will let cars know how to react to the situation, either stopping briefly or moving them through slowly. 3) Public Relations. While you are standing out on the course, you are the race ambassador. When you see a local spectator, thank them for their support. When you see a local motorist, thank them for their patience. 4) Be a Cheerleader. Some runners may be struggling, motivate and cheer them on. Make a difference! 5) Wear the Orange Vest Proudly. Your official race t-shirt and orange vest mean that you are in charge. Volunteers make Carbon Valley Half Marathon & 5K Race happen. Every racer understands and appreciates the importance of having a safe race course- made possible by having awesome course marshals like you.
